Fix Don’t Nix 2023

Something that i think gets misconstrued about typography is that it doesn’t have to be typed. Much the same way we look to they sky and see faces and shapes, we can look to a collection of junk and see something more.

I got to showcase this piece i made to a small class of 20 last year, and it was met with mixed response. Once people understood it they were mostly glowing, but the biggest critique was that people didn’t know what Nix meant. In my opinion that’s pretty good result for this kind of experiment, and proves my point.

Sometimes its better to leave things up to interpretation and get funky with it. So long as you follow the template for the alphabet, you can really use anything you want to portray your message. In-fact, id argue it opens up a whole other realm of possibility. I only needed 3 words to not only create a call to action, but also set the idea behind it. Take your junk, fix it, and let it live to ride another day. Yes, its not always reasonable, but its so much better for the environment if we didn’t immediately toss our old worn items.

In any case, moral of the story is that typography is more than using your keyboard to press fun buttons.
